Preserving Intangible Culture

Kathakali is a traditional classical dance-drama from Kerala, India.  It is known for its elaborate costumes, intricate gestures, and dramatic storytelling. Performers wear vibrant, layered costumes which include skirts, jackets, and ornate headgear - making the characters appear larger-than-life. Watching a Kathakali performance in stereoscopic180-degree VR video and ambisonic audio promises to be an exhilarating experience as it puts the viewer up-close to the performers and musicians on centre-stage.

Kathakali is one of five dances featured in Divine Expressions: A VR Anthology of Classical Indian Dances. To be presented by the Kathakali Dance Troupe from Bhaskar’s Arts Academy, it will be an 10-minute production of Cherita Singapura - which tells the story of Sang Nila Utama, the Prince from Palembang who sighted a lion on the island of Temasek in 1299 and renamed it "Singapura" - the lion city.
