Preserving Intangible Heritage: Odissi
Odissi is a major ancient Indian classical dance that originated in the temples of Odisha – an eastern coastal state of India. It has been performed in temples since at least the 1st century BCE. Odissi was performed predominantly by women and expressed religious stories and spiritual ideas. Odissi is known for its intricate movements, grace, and expressive gestures. Odissi includes a combination of expressive dance and pure dance. It features distinct body positions and movements characterized by fluidity, with emphasis on grace and intricate footwork.
Odissi is one of five dance forms featured in Divine Expressions: A VR Anthology of Classical Indian Dances. Choreographed by award winning dancer and choreographer Raka Maitra, Artistic Director of Chowk Productions, the 8-minute presentation showcases classical Odissi and Chowk's signature contemporary expression featuring Chowk's Artistic Director Raka Maitra, and accomplished dancer Mitu Das.
